Digital Debate: Engaging the At-Home Consumer | Recap
By Scott Zakheim
Earlier today, I had the pleasure of hosting a virtual panel-style dialogue with industry leaders Daniel Freedman (Chief Executive Officer of BurnAlong) and Orchid Bertelsen (Head of Digital Innovation at Nestle) – see the recording here.
More than 150 global executives tuned in from companies like Apple, Boston Red Sox, Coca-Cola, Crayola, Deloitte, Disney, ESPN, Fossil, Gannett, General Mills, Golden State Warriors, HARMAN, Hilton, Hotwire, IBM, iHeartMedia, Intel, Kraft Heinz, Mars, Merkle, MGM, Nestle, Nike, Pfizer, Philips, PwC, Robert Bosch, Scholastic, San Francisco 49ers, Snap, SoundCloud, Twitter, Univision, Verizon, ViacomCBS, Walmart, Warner Bros., WarnerMedia, and more!
We discussed best practices and new approaches for managing the “new normal.” Specifically, we touched upon how brands are bringing consumer engagement into the home, evaluating the ever-changing digital media landscape, and managing broad changes to the overall digital economy during a global pandemic.
How are brands engaging the remote consumer: Are they staying the course or adjusting their strategy?
To better understand the evolution of the digital economy right now, we honed in on the following questions:
How are we approaching our “new normal” at a personal and professional level?
How are brands engaging the remote consumer: Are they staying the course or adjusting their strategy?
How are emerging brands taking advantage of lowering CPMs and premium inventory?
Is the new, at-home digital consumer a short term blimp on the radar or is this a long term paradigm shift that will affect brands in perpetuity?
Finally, Orchid and Daniel emphasized the importance of anticipating what behaviors, routines, and habits are being shaped now that will impact the consumer when things go back to a less remote world. Specifically, many companies are being forced to reach their consumers in a more digital way, enabling a hybrid of online and offline engagement for the future. Both spoke to the need and desire for real human interaction during this period while expressing gratitude for connectivity that virtual affords us despite being behind a screen, both of which will inherently create a new balance between live and virtual engagement in a post-Covid world.
